This week Colpey Calling x The Fix went all sub-Saharan, with some of our favourite African belters plus a mix from Hi Life Hi Fi. The DJ first came to our attention as a warm-up for Ibibio Sound Machine, where they whipped the crowd into a frenzy before the main act.
The idea behind this mix was to showcase some of my favourite records from South Africa and Zimbabwe from the 70’s and 80’s. There’s so much amazing music to have come out of both countries over this period. However, even though they are close geographically, their contrasting histories influence the style of pop music heavily over this time, resulting in two truly unique and danceable sounds. Hi Life Hi Fi currently run a bi-monthly night at The Plough Inn in Easton (which they suggest is probably the best venue in Bristol…), focusing on old school analogue sounds from all corners of Africa and maybe sneaking a bit of bass when mood takes them. You can also catch them at Lengoma, which they co-run with Mango Park and The Area Boys. The idea is to bring Global Bass and Afro-Futurism to various venues around Bristol. Hi Life Hi Fi will also be popping up on the festival circuit over the summer, so be sure to say hello and have a boogie!
