Currently on tour in support of his seventh studio album Songs For Other People’s Weddings, Gothenburg singer-songwriter Jens Lekman brings his whimsical indie pop to Strange Brew this Thursday. Such is the Swedes’ quirkiness and unpredictability, he is not adverse to surprising audiences with his style of live performance – expect anything from Lekman appearing alone with a guitar, to his performing acapella versions of his tunes, to performing alongside a full choir and string quartet. Lekman’s songs are imbued with a distinct lyrical style – melancholic, romantic, wistful – and one can perceive within his poppy, melodic approach the significant influence of artists like Belle & Sebastian and Jonathan Richman.
Lekman’s 2007 breakout album Night Falls Over Kortedala reached number 1 in his native Sweden, achieved near-unanimous critical acclaim, drew comparisons to Jarvis Cocker and Craig Finn, and achieved the not-too-shabby accolade of being ranked 60th in the Guardian’s 100 Best Albums of the 20th Century list.
Tickets are still available for the show. This is your chance to witness Lekman’s unique and celebrated showcase of songwriting in an attractively intimate venue. See here for more information.
