Marika Hackman is the former Burberry model-turned songstress, whose friendships with the likes of Cara Delevingne and Laura Marling have often been unfairly placed as points of interest ahead of her actual music.
What’s Her Sound?
The folky pop of Laura Marling is indeed a good starting point, but Hackman’s music is full of dark edges, the songs always on the edge of slipping into an abyss, full of references to bones and skin and animalistic imagery. It also contains some touches of electronica, which juxtaposes nicely with the delicate and summery guitar work and brooding lyrical content – the song ‘Bath Is Black’ being the perfect example of this.
What Is She Up To?
Hackman recently released her debut album, We Slept At Last, which gained an excellent critical reception, and her new single, ‘Ophelia’, is released on 27 April. She is currently touring.
