of Montreal are the mainstays of the alternative rock scene, the band originally forming in 1996 in Athens, Georgia and named after a failed romance between lead singer Kevin Barnes and a woman ‘of Montreal’. The band are famed for their live shows, combining the extroverted antics of Barnes with psychedelic light shows.
What’s Their Sound?
Through of Montreal’s thirteen-album, 20-year career their music has encompassed everything from gospel to afrobeat, funk and glam. Their music is an acquired taste, hinging upon Barnes’ unique singing voice and a reluctance to confine themselves to the normalcy of mainstream rock music. While generally critically acclaimed, the band’s highpoint came with the release of album Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer in 2007.
