Review: Masquerade Ball, Christmas Spiegeltent

FBBanner-620x312Bristol may be a superb city for night-time shenanigans, but nocturnal revellers are often left with an unanswered question on their lips: where exactly can you find a party combining Brazilian carnival dancers, topless acrobats and Victorian rapping?

Well, that question goes unanswered no more! The Christmas Spiegeltent has returned this year, and reached its peak with the Masquerade Ball. Cram a multiplicity of masked revellers into a beautiful mirrored tent from 1930s Germany, add a variety of saucy and splendid performers and you’re set for a good night out.

Leading the charge is compère Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer and his banjolele-littered rapping – the only downside to his performance being its brevity. Acrobats Anne-Fay and the muscled August provide an enchanting addition to the duelling guitars of ShowHawk Duo. Smerins Anti-Social Club blast some brass-heavy ska and funk-soul and DJ John Hendicott ensures that anyone who wants to dance – and the dancefloor is packed – has ample opportunity to do so.

An excellent night of debauchery is made complete by the participation of the crowd. Few, if any, party-goers are unmasked, and some of the outfits are outstanding. It is unsurprising that this event sold out in no time – if you’re looking to party before Christmas 2015, snap up a ticket pronto.

7/10
